The European project entitled AVTIA - Audiovisual Translation for Inclusion and Accessibility has been written and coordinated by the project applicant G.E. Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology of Târgu Mureș (Romania) with Pixel support. The project was funded by the Erasmus+ Programme, Cooperation partnerships in Higher Education. The AVTIA project has the aim to raise awareness, create content and form and refine practical abilities of the Higher Education lectures and students as future human resources in audiovisual translation for inclusion and accessibility.

Project Title

Audiovisual Translation for Inclusion and Accessibility

Context

Disabilities in the project perspective include persons with sensory disabilities (hearing and visual disabilities) that prevent their full access to media information and social life. With an estimated number of 90 million blind and partially sighted persons and about 190 million deaf and hard of hearing persons in the European Region, the need to address audiovisual translation for inclusion to a larger extent is imperative.

Objectives

The AVTIA project’s specific objectives are:
• To develop new innovative content that will provide lecturers in HEIs with knowledge and materials in the form of an open online courseware (OPC) to teach and assess inclusion in audiovisual translation - subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing, audio description for the blind and partially sighted
• To build and consolidate required knowledge and skills of university students (also freelance translators) specializing in audiovisual translation through autonomous learning, in order to better prepare them for the current labour market needs
• To generate attitude-change and raise HEIs and stakeholders’ awareness of the disparity in the range of inclusion services provided in different EU member states and the need and obligation to ensure access to information intended for the general public to people with disabilities within national legislation/provisions of participating countries

Target Group

The target groups involved in the project are:
• Lecturers/teachers and trainers in philology studies
• Undergraduate and postgraduate university students specializing in translation and audio-visual translation; novice translators for career switch or advancement/upskilling in AVT for inclusion
• Decision/policy makers in Higher Education Institutions (e.g. rectors, deans, BA and MA programme coordinators, university Senate members, etc)

Results

The project will produce the following deliverables:
• Training package for lecturers on teaching and assessing Inclusion in Audiovisual Translation
• Training package for students on subtitling for the hearing impaired and audio description for the vision impaired
• Set of policy recommendations for promoting the insertion of inclusive approaches and practices in audiovisual translation in university courses and curricula
